Words & differences #1

I am sure we will do a bit of this; comparison and translation of the local terminology and noticing stuff that looks different. I am sure by the end of our trip we wont notice them anymore :)

First impressions.....lets dabble in some differences between hemispheres & sides of the Pacific Ocean. Loving the Canadian accents, and very open and welcoming people everywhere. They seem to like tourists! Much better infrastructure and public transport systems than we are used to in NZ.

Luca is convinced we are in Maple Syrup Land - as the Canadian flag symbol as on the maple syrup bottle. Good brand building Canada!
Fire hydrants look like fire hydrants over here!
And things we need say differently to be understood:
  • Washrooms = toilets
  • Broil = grill
  • Sidewalk = footpath
  • Toque (kinda pronounced touk) = beanie i.e. knitted cap
  • Trunk = boot (as in car)

  1. I feel a really cool school project coming on to deliver when the kids are back in Taupo. Give a talk and invite the other kids in the class to translate it back into Kiwi.

  3. The different words are a challenge. 'Rubber' is the one to avoid. Eraser much safer. Good for Luca to keep record of the different words to share at school in NZ. His own dictionary. Xx 😄
